HOW WE STARTED

Prince George's Pet Unity Project, or PG PUP for short, began with a very specific mission: to end the breed specific legislation (BSL, the "pit bull ban") in Prince George's County, Maryland.

After years of conversations with legislators, welfare advocates, veterinary professionals, and most importantly, our neighbors, we made it happen. A repeal of the breed ban was passed by the Prince George's County Council on November 18, 2025, and signed into law on February 1, 2026.

Bully breeds are now legal to own, adopt, and foster in PG County.

Learn more about the bill that increases accountability, safety, and equity for both pets and pet guardians.

Our work doesn't end there.

OUR MISSION

has expanded to meet the needs of our community:

To guide the responsible integration of the banned dogs back into our community safely for both pets and people.

To support, improve, and encourage enforcement of  breed-neutral dangerous dog and responsible ownership laws.

To increase the joys of responsible human and dog relationships through training, support, spay/neuter, community education, support, and outreach.

To keep people and pets together in loving homes.

We make this possible through educational programming, community support and outreach, local partnerships, and political advocacy.

PG PUP is a 501 (c) (3) & 501 (c) (4) approved charity run entirely by volunteers, and every penny we raise goes directly to pets and pet guardians.

Or if you would like to volunteer,
